Help Save Water

Be sensible! The Earth might seem like it has abundant water, but in fact only one percent of all water on the planet is available for humans. Buy fixtures and products that are water efficient - you can use less water to get the same job done just as well. When you go shopping, look for the WaterSense label to find water efficient products.

Shower power! A full bathtub requires about 70 gallons of water, but taking a five-minute shower saves water by using 10 to 25 gallons. Put a little timer or clock near your shower so you can see how fast you are. Save even more water, and money on your water bill, by installing a water-efficient showerhead, or ask your landlord to install one if you rent.

Mason jar chandelier

I think a really cool idea for a chandelier is to make one out of mason jars.  It is a good way to recycle the jars.  Especially if you don't can anymore. You can always find them at garage sales and online auctions.  Plus, it saves you money- chandeliers can cost big money.

Here are a couple of websites that show you how to make one.

Mulch your potted Plants

Mulch your potted plants - indoors and outdoors - so that you don't have to water them so often. You can use a wide range of materials - from the conventional, such as pebbles, bark chippings, grass clippings - to the decorative, such as pine cones, marbles, small bits of broken crockery, bits of polystyrene packaging - use your imagination!

Furniture made out of Cardboard

Much like our old friend bamboo, it seems that cardboard can be used as a replacement for many conventional materials, without chopping down trees or otherwise using virgin materials, and usually incorporates a good deal of recycled material. It makes great furniture, can be used for lighting and makes beautiful and interesting art.

If you are anything like me I would have never thought about making furniture out of cardboard.

Green tips for Children

1.  Get the kids to turn off video games (both the TV and the console) after they're done playing, and you'll win back about $100 per year.

2.  Teach children to turn off the water while brushing their teeth. Leaving the tap running during the recommended two minutes of brushing can waste up to five gallons of water a day.

3.   Live in one of the 11 states with bottle bills? Have your kids collect aluminum cans and plastic bottles to redeem for cash
